No Club Championships were played this weekend as a result of the Jim Souter / Ivil Reid sponsored Winter Pairs being played. This is an annual event sponsored by these two well-known bowlers and Guyra identities.
With 16 teams fronting up to play there was bound to be a number of games that would go down to the wire and a number of games that could be considered upsets.
After round one Saturday there was teams licking their wounded prides, but as we all know round one has never won a competition, with two rounds still to play anything could happen.
Sunday July 6 saw a mild day to say the least and all teams responded to the conditions, with play getting under way at 10.00am for round two, after which a clearer picture of the overall results would emerge. At the completion of round two there were four teams with two wins each. They were Chris Kliendienst and Adam Bennett, Barry Presnell and Richard Lewis, Braden Sole and Steven Sole, John Jackson and Jim Souter. The four teams to go through to the playoffs still were yet to be determined and with one round to play any of the sixteen teams were still in the running. As those playing the game know that as two of these teams were playing each other then other results would come into calculations and that was the case.
Two of the two round winners played one another in round three and it was a last bowl game with Braden Sole and Steven Sole winning over John Jackson and Jim Souter by two shots. Dan Kennedy and Graham Starr managed to scramble home and edge out John and Jim by the slimmest of margins.
So after three rounds of bowls the Semi Finalists were: Dan Kennedy and Graham Starr, Chris Kliendienst and Adam Bennett, Barry Presnell and Richard Lewis, Braden Sole and Steven Sole. Congratulations to those four teams for making it to the playoffs, and a thank you must go to the Sponsors, without whom these competitions would not be possible.
Club Competitions for Saturday July 12:
Start: 1.00pm. Starter and Umpire: John Jackson.
Alex Jackson Open Winter Singles:
Andrew Sparke to play John Jackson with Chris Kliendienst to mark.
Barry Presnell to play Wayne Reeves with Mick Rusden to keep the card.
The match committee would like to thank Barry Walls and Richard Lewis for playing their game during the week, also the staff for allowing the game to be played early.
On behalf of the match committee and members of the Guyra Bowling and Recreation Club I would like to wish Dan Kennedy and Shane Beechey all the best in their Zone 3 Pairs Playoffs in Wee Waa this weekend July 12 and 13.
Dan and Shane won through to these playoffs when they were successful in winning the New England District Pairs.
Until next week good bowling.
