First Grade with Luke Birmingham
On Saturday, Guyra took on last placed East Armidale in their final match before the semis. With a near full strength side, Guyra scored through Ethan Kennedy’s to lead 1-0 after five minutes. However, East’s quickly replied to make the score 1-1 after a mistake at the back. From here, the Guyra boys played some of their worst soccer of the season, and whilst never looking in danger of conceding another goal, were unable to extend the score line. After half time, the Guyra boys continued to play poorly and while many scoring chances were created, they were unable to find the back of the net. However, with 15 minutes remaining, some strong lead up play saw Mick Purvis find the back of the net to make the score 2-1. From here, the Guyra boys picked up the pace of the game and scored two further goals making the final score 4-1. After the final round game of the season, Guyra finished five points clear of second placed Glen Innes, making them Minor Premiers for the second year in a row. This means that the major semi final will be held at the recreation grounds this Saturday. All supporters welcome to come and cheer on both First and Second Grade with kick off from 1pm.
Second Grade with Des Walls
The final game of the regulation season was played out at home over the weekend and uncharacteristically Guyra went down 5-3.
Three great goals to Guyra just were not enough to overcome the East’s team from Armidale. Ethan K. slammed one home from a very acute angle to level the score at 1 all. Then once again Ethan just had to tap the ball over the line after a goal keeper fumble to take the lead 2-1. East’s then scored 4 goals to take the lead 4-2 mid-way through the second half. Aaron Mendes scored his first goal this year with a half-way shot that flew over the head of the Armidale goal keeper.
Although a typical game where you score three goals it would almost be certain to be a win, This game just shows how much competition there is in the Second division this year which show-cases some excellent games to watch and be involved in.
Points: 3 - Aaron Mendes 2 - Matt Duthie 1 - Troy Martin.
Come and cheer the lads on this weekend as both First Grade and Second Grade play the major semi-final at Guyra and we come up against our arch rivals, Glen Inns in both grades. Start time for Second grade is 1pm and following that is First grade at 3pm. Come and watch some soccer and afterwards the ‘Guyra’s Got Talent” fundraiser is on at the Guyra Bowling and Recreation Club. Tickets are still available from IGA, Country Fresh Bakery and Bowling Club. Hope to see Guyra get behind the quiet achievers.
Third Grade with Adam Brennan
In their last game to end the season, 3rds played North’s in a very quick starting game with North’s scoring 2 quick goals. The boys had trouble keeping up, but to the teams credit they kept North’s on their toes. The backs made up of Wayne Archibald, Scott Mendes, Lachlan Stewart and fill in Rex Brennan all had a big game. Young upcoming strikers Kyle Taylor and Dan Lennon put plenty of pressure on North’s backs but couldn’t find the back of the net due to some good work by the goalie. Not to be outdone Guyra’s own super goalie Damien Hutton pulled off some great saves of his own.
Half time saw Guyra 3-0 down and, with a late North’s goal, the game appeared over. Without captain coach and goal scoring machine Dasha Lennon to give the half time talk senior players took it upon themselves to fire up the side. The team stuck it to North’s for most of the second half. Shane Wolfenden, Adam Brennan and Mal Gaukroger along with fill in half Curly Dowden were working overtime to keep the pressure on.
A lucky goal to North’s in the last minutes took the score to 4-0. Points this week Lachlan Stewart 3, Kyle Taylor 2 Wayne Archibald 1. Can I also make mention and congratulate Adam Lennon on his huge success in the state youth league soccer side which took out their semi-final on Saturday 2-0. He travels back to Newcastle on Saturday for the grand final- well done and good luck Adam!
Dasha thankyou
I would like to thank all Third and second grade players for their commitment this year. This commitment has at times allowed us to field a side, when we thought it might not be possible. Also I would like to wish First and Second grade all the very best for the semi finals and finals, hoping that they can win the premierships that they deserve, I encourage all third players and club supporters to support them in the coming weeks starting this Saturday at home in the first of the Semi Finals.
